Geocities launched the year I was born, and by the time it shut down in 2009 I was just getting myself online, so I missed that fun. The internet I see today feels highly polished, architected to advertise, and more recently and more rapidly, filling with AI.
And then I stumbled upon Neocities. What a wonderfully weird, esoteric collection of stuff. It felt like you'd stumbled across a bunch of diaries, and instead of feeling polished and calculated, these sites were messy, and scattered, and a bit chaotic. It was wonderful.
I didn't plan on making my own; I figured I had nothing complete to show, or of great substance. And now I think that's almost the point. It's not about ... It's about real people, sharing whaterver it is they feel like sharing, however they feel like sharing it.
I grew up on a street called Third St., and when thinking of a name for the site, it jumped right out.
